Garifuna singers...

In 1675 a slave ship carrying hundreds of Africans to Jamaica ran aground of the coast of Bequia. Survivors came ashore to St. Vincent, and were soon intergated into the Kalinago population. The off-spring of the union of the black African males and the kalinago women were named Garifuna.

When all efforts and strategies by the Brisitsh colonizers failed to enslave the Garifuna, it was deemed necessary to destroy them. The French were more interested in converting the Kalinagos into French culture, and saw them as potential allies in the freedom and equality revolution which they were promoting, but the British were after the fertile Garifuna lands.
